ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES
ALL CLASSES BEGIN AT 9:45 A.M.
THE PASTOR’S COVENANT CLASS:
The Pastor's Covenant Sunday School class meets in the Minister’s Conference Room #350 each Sunday morning from 9:45am to 10:35 am. The class is led by Pastor Terry Greer and his wife, Lisa, and focuses on Bible study. Please feel free to join this class which is for all ages if you are looking for a "place to belong."
SOJOURNERS: Rm. 221.
For all ages, this class is designed for study, prayer, discussion, and shared leadership. This class uses a variety of Biblical and spiritual resources for literature. Currently, the class is working through the Journey Through the Bible Series and is studying Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Lamentations.
ADAMS: Rm. 251.
Taught by Charles Adams, this class studies a variety of challenging subjects from the Christian perspective. Currently, the class is completing a study of The Gospel of Judas, using two books by Pagels and Ehrman. This is part of a broader study of the early Christian Church essentially from Pentecost to Constantine. Both couples and singles in the 55-65 age range attend this class.
NEW DIMENSIONS: Rm. 306.
Primarily a couples class (45-55 age range), New Dimensions studies a variety of scripture oriented subjects and books. The class is using the International Lesson Series for their study material. Lessons are discussion based, with class members and outside speakers rotating teaching responsibilities.
HARRIS LEND-A-HAND: Rm. 353.
An all men’s class, this class enjoys a time of singing and fellowship, followed by a lesson taught from the International Lesson Series.
WESLEY: Rm. 352.
Both couples and singles 65 and over enjoy this class that uses the International Lesson Series. Singing and a class devotion precede class lessons.
GENESIS: Courtyard Conference Room 111.
This discussion class is taught by class members and uses a variety of literature including the International Lesson Series. Single women of all ages are invited to be a part of this fellowship.
SEEKERS: Rm. 354.
Several teachers rotate leading discussions from the International Lesson Series for this group. The age range of the class is 60 and over, including both singles and couples.
THE UPPER ROOM CLASS: Rm. 305.
This class provides study on a variety of topics from everyday issues to in-depth Bible Study for couples in the 30 to 40 age range. Class members rotate teaching responsibilities.
FAITHFINDERS: Rm 257.
This class welcomes singles and couples of all ages. The class is discussion based and focuses on a broad range of theological and spiritual issues. The class is currently studying Parables From the Backside by J. Ellsworth Kalas.
CHALLENGERS: Rm. 255.
This group (age 70 and up) carefully selects literature for in-depth discussion and investigation. This winter, the class will be studying Lord, Teach Us. The Lord's Prayer and the Christian Life by William H.Willimon and Stanley Hauerwas. Next, the class plans to read The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss by James W. Kemp, a retired Methodist minister. Teaching responsibilities are rotated among class members.
THE C.L.A.S.S. (YOUNG ADULTS): Rm. 351
This class is for singles and married couples in their 20s and early 30s. The class is discussion based and focuses on issues relevant to this age group from a Biblical and Christian perspective. They are currently studying The Wired Word, a curriculum that blends scripture study and current events.
Short-term Sunday School classes are offered periodically with emphasis on a particular area such as spiritual gifts or journaling. Members may join any of these that interest them and then return to their regular Sunday School classes.
Study Opportunities for Spiritual Growth
YOUNG ADULT BIBLE STUDY:
Calvin Brown leads a Bible study for young adults in their 20s and early 30s, both single and married every Wednesday night during First Fellowship. The class meets from 6-7:30 p.m. A discussion format class centered on the Bible's relevance to the issues young adults face, this class also provides fellowship and support for its members.
Hilltoppers (Senior Adult Ministry)
Hilltoppers is a Christian fellowship group for older adults age 50 and over. The mission of Hilltoppers is to explore, develop, and implement programs which will enhance the quality of life for older adults. There are no membership fees and members may attend as many or as few activities as they wish. Activities include day trips, overnight trips, and weekend getaways. Programs are provided for both active retirees and those with a more sedentary lifestyle. The best way to learn about us is to join us!
United Methodist Women
UMW is the women’s mission arm of the United Methodist Church at home and abroad whose purpose is to know Christ and make Him known throughout the world. Open to women of all ages, the general meeting is held the first Monday of each moth in the fellowship hall. Small groups, called circles, meet on the second Monday and Tuesday of the month.
- Mission Opportunities through the UMW
- Gifts to missions through pledges, special mission recognition in honor of a birthday, new baby, anniversary, and the like.
- Building and maintenance of Camp Sumatanga
- We save labels to help purchase educational items for the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.
- Donations for the purchase of Christmas gifts for the children of the Sand Mountain Parish.
- Cookie trays for the home bound.
- Scholarships to students.
- Visitation of those confined to health care facilities.
- Meals provided to families where death has occurred.
- Contribute to many worthy projects such as: UMRA, Tennessee Valley Outreach, Neighborhood Christian Center, Schools in Bolivia and Mozambique.
Men’s Breakfast
Held on the second Sunday morning of each month, this group is open to all the men of the church. Breakfast is provided along with time for fellowship and sharing. Meeting time is 7:30-8:30 A.M.
Study Opportunities Offered Periodically
Disciple Bible Study
Disciple Bible Study is an intensive Bible study which requires participants to study 30 minutes a day and attend a weekly two-hour group meeting.
Disciple I is a 34-week intensive study of the Old and New Testaments. This course must be completed before participants may take the other Disciple courses, but once it is has been completed, you may take any of the other courses in any order.
Disciple II is a 32-week study for the graduates of Disciple I centering on Genesis-Exodus and Luke-Acts.
Disciple III concentrates on the Prophets and writings of Paul in a 32-week study.
Disciple IV covers the writings portion of the Hebrew Canon as well as the New Testament books of the Gospel of John: 1, 2 and 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation.
Jesus in the Gospels
Jesus in the Gospels is the first study in a line of projected studies different from, but also related in some ways to, Disciple Bible study. It focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in the four Gospels. This 30-week study includes daily study and journaling and a weekly two-and-a-half hour group meeting. Completion of Disciple I is required before taking this course. Participants will grow increasingly alert to the view of Jesus presented in each Gospel.
Spiritual Gifts Survey
This is a short-term class designed to build confidence and commitment among adults as they discover their own unique gifts and talents for service in Christ’s church. This course is usually offered before our Members in Ministry Lay Involvement campaign.
