Ministry Activities
Congregational Care
As prescribed by the words of 2 Corinthians 1:4, ”Comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God,“ caring for one another as members of the First Church family is the aim of the congregational care team. This care takes many forms:
- Card Ministry
- Errands & Fix-Its
- Food Ministry
- Homebound/Nursing Home Visitation
- Hospital Visitation
- ICU Care Baskets
- Prayer Support Ministries
- E-mail prayer and information line. Subscribe/Unsubscribe
- Prayer and information telephone line. Call (256) 355-9494 to hear the prayer concerns of the day.
- Prayer Warriors - During the worship service, prayer warriors focus their prayers on the service itself, for the minister, the musicians, and the congregation.
- Prayer Hedge - Members involved in this prayer ministry devote at least 15 minutes of each day to praying for the minister and his family
Worship
It takes many helping hands to create a friendly, welcoming, spirit-filled atmosphere of worship for the services at First Church. We believe each member is gifted for ministry and there are many ways to bring your special gifts to our worship experiences.
Altar Guild
Members of the Altar Guild assist with the interpretative arrangements on the altar table of the sanctuary. They also help with visuals to assist the congregation in a total experience of worship.
Communion Stewards
Communion stewards assist with preparing the elements of communion.
Drama Team
Members of the team bring the message of worship through dramas presented at the contemporary service at 8:45 A.M.
Flower Guild
Flowers are arranged by members of the flower guild to bring beauty to the sanctuary and glory to God.
Greeters
Greeters at the 8:45 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. services welcome all worshippers as they enter the sanctuary. They make a special effort to make our visitors feel at home and find their way to the nursery, classrooms, sanctuary, and the like.
Music Ministries
First Methodist has many opportunities for the sharing of musical gifts.
- Chancel Choir - The Chancel Choir performs each Sunday at the 11:00 A.M. service and at several special events throughout the year with the accompaniment of an orchestra.

Sound/Light Technician
The sound/light technician works with the ministers and musicians at each service.
Ushers
Ushers greet people as they enter the sanctuary, distributing bulletins, helping people find seats, and taking up the offering.
Evangelism
Making guests feel welcome and helping new members become active in small group study groups and in missions as they are gifted and called is the focus of the evangelism team.
Attendance Registration Processing
The team processes the attendance registration information each week in order to identify visitors and monitor church attendance. This allows the Staff, Pastors, and Congregational Care Team to check on those who may be absent due to illness or special concerns.
New Member Dinner
Members of the evangelism team host new member dinners several times during the year. The dinner gives newcomers a chance to meet others and to feel a part of our fellowship.
Shepherding
When new members join the church, they are paired with established members who will help them find ways to become involved in small group activities, introduce them to others in the congregation, and generally ensure that they feel welcome and involved.
Administrative
It takes many helping hands to keep the business side of the church running smoothly so that the ministry of the church can continue.
Special Office Tasks
Volunteers serve a much-needed role in the office during special seasons of the year, such as Lent and Advent, which require special mailings to the congregation.
Substitute Secretary
Volunteers fill in for the church secretary as needed.
Volunteer Receptionist
Volunteers help the office staff, including answering phones, preparing the Tidings newsletter for mailing, and assist with other office duties.
Talents
We strive to create opportunities for each member to serve according to his or her talents. Many are gifted in the creative arts and we celebrate those abilities in many ways.
- Calligraphy
- Creative Dance
- Photography
- Sewing
- Visual Arts/Crafts
